The Marvel Cinematic Universe and Akwesasne were shook last week when a Mohawk character emerged from its animated series, “What If …?” The groundbreaking sixth episode of season 2 introduces Kahhori, the MCUs’ first original superhero, to the multiverse. She is a young Mohawk woman on a quest to discover her power after the Tesseract falls to Earth and lands within the sovereign Haudenosaunee Confederacy before the colonization of America.
On a warm day back in September, a small group of people step onto a pontoon boat on the St. Lawrence River, hair blowing in the wind. The sky is blue and the sun sparkles off the water. A travel writer from Massena, a tour guide from New York City, and some St. Lawrence University officials all sit on the boat taking in Akwesasne from the water. It’s part of a familiarization tour Akwesasne Travel planned to practice new tours they’ve been working on.
Akwesasne Travel received a New York State Tourism Excellence Award for Excellence in Sustainable Stewardship, a new category in 2023 acknowledging the critical work done in advancing the areas of sustainability, DEAI (diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion), international marketing, travel itineraries, and promoting the great outdoors of New York State.
The 2023 Art Market and Juried Show, presented by Akwesasne Travel, brought nearly 1500 community members and visitors to Generations Park on Sunday, July 2 for a vibrant showcase of the arts. Heat and humidity did not dampen spirits, as attendees eagerly experienced phenomenal art works, live performances, and demonstrations throughout the day.
Akwesasne Travel is pleased to announce the 2023 Akwesasne Art Market & Juried Show will take place Sunday, July 2 at Generations Park. The event celebrates the outstanding creative talent that exists within our special community, and showcases Akwesasne as a vibrant destination for the arts.
The juried art show will award over $10,000 across 12 diverse categories such as pottery, sculpture, beadwork, quillwork, quilts and textiles, painting, and more. In addition, five Judge’s Choice nods and the much-anticipated Best in Show honor will be awarded. New this year is a youth category for emerging artists age 17 and under.
Akwesasne Travel named Tribal Destination of the Year at the 2022 American Indian Tourism Conference, hosted by AIANTA, American Indian Alaskan Native Tourism Association. As the only organization dedicated to advancing indigenous tourism across the United States, AIANTA recognizes the best of Indian Country travel and tourism at its annual Excellence in Tourism Industry Awards (formerly known as the Enough Good People Industry Awards) ceremony.
