Connect with the people, stories, art, culture, and natural beauty of the Akwesasne Mohawk Territory.

In our Kanien’kehà:ka language, Akwesasne means land where the partridge drums. The name refers to the roaring waters that surrounded the territory before the St. Lawrence Seaway. It’s pronounced Ah-qwee-zuhss-neh.

Experience this historic place where nations meet.

Akwesasne is a Mohawk territory on the shores of the mighty St. Lawrence River. Our lands extend into the United States and Canada, specifically present day New York State, Ontario and Quebec.

Regionally speaking, we are an important part of New York’s North Country and Ontario’s Seaway Valley. Akwesasne is located just a few miles from two ports of entry, making cross-border travel relatively easy.

Akwesasne is primarily English-speaking, but you’ll see and hear plenty of Kanienʼkéha words and phrases as our people proudly restore relationship with our original language.
