Akwesasne Travel Presents 2nd Annual Art Market & Juried Show

Akwesasne Travel is pleased to announce the 2023 Akwesasne Art Market & Juried Show will take place Sunday, July 2 at Generations Park. The event celebrates the outstanding creative talent that exists within our special community, and showcases Akwesasne as a vibrant destination for the arts.
The juried art show will award over $10,000 across 12 diverse categories such as pottery, sculpture, beadwork, quillwork, quilts and textiles, painting, and more. In addition, five Judge’s Choice nods and the much-anticipated Best in Show honor will be awarded. New this year is a youth category for emerging artists age 17 and under.
Akwesasne Selected As A T-Mobile Hometown Grant Recipient

Akwesasne was selected as one of 25 T-Mobile Hometown Grant winners: the grant funding will be applied to a special Smoke Dance Sculpture art installation and landscaping for Sken:nen Park West. Sken:nen park is located in the heart of downtown Akwesasne, along Route 37. Sken:nen Park is part of a downtown revitalization initiative that began pre-covid, led by the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s cultural tourism division.
Akwesasne Travel named Tribal Destination of the Year

Akwesasne Travel named Tribal Destination of the Year at the 2022 American Indian Tourism Conference, hosted by AIANTA, American Indian Alaskan Native Tourism Association. As the only organization dedicated to advancing indigenous tourism across the United States, AIANTA recognizes the best of Indian Country travel and tourism at its annual Excellence in Tourism Industry Awards (formerly known as the Enough Good People Industry Awards) ceremony.
Akwesasne Tourism Business Support Project Awarded $857,119

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Office of Economic Development (OED) announced today that it was awarded a two-year grant in the amount of $857,119 in federal funding for the Akwesasne Tourism Business Support Project. The funding was made available under the FY 2021 American Rescue Plan Act through the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s (EDA) Indigenous Communities Program.
Akwesasne International Pow Wow Returns – September 10 & 11, 2022

The Akwesasne International Pow Wow set to return for their 20th annual event, September 10 & 11, 2022 at the A’nowara’ko:wa Arena, Cornwall Island, Ontario.
On the shores of the beautiful St. Lawrence River, visitors can enjoy the two-day event with good music, good food and good company. The Akwesasne Pow Wow brings together the best Native artisans, drummers and dancers from this region.
Akwesasne Selected for EPA Recreation Economy for Rural Communities Award

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe and partners are bringing the Tribal community together to build on the Tribe’s cultural tourism, economic development, and infrastructure strategies. Some of those developments include a new heritage center, an art gallery, and the creation of green park spaces along the St. Regis River located in downtown Akwesasne. The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is one of twenty-five communities selected as partners for Recreation Economy for Rural Communities planning assistance in 2022.

The event is a celebration of Akwesasne art and culture, complete with artist vendors, live performances, demonstrations and a juried art competition.

Despite the territory’s geographical complexity, residents (Akwesasronon) consider themselves to be one community. Last fall, Akwesasne Travel launched three tours to offer visitors a chance to learn about Akwesasne culture.

The Mohawk community in Akwesasne near Cornwall, Ont., has launched a series of cultural experiences for visitors wishing to understand more about the people and their traditions, spurred by the discovery of unmarked graves at former residential schools. Akwesasne Travel launched two months ago following a surge in interest about its cultural history.
